How to check the recommendation

• Use the result as a starting point, then compare the maker’s size label on the exact bat.
• Ask the player to take their normal stance and make a controlled backlift. The bat should not force them to lift the shoulder or lose balance.
• If the player is close to a size boundary, compare both sizes. Choose control and comfortable pickup rather than buying an oversized bat to grow into.
• For adult bats, weight distribution and pickup can matter as much as the printed size.

How to use a cricket bat size chart

Bat size labels usually progress from junior sizes through Size 6, Harrow and then adult Short Handle. Height is the best starting point, but it should not replace a comfort check. The player should be able to lift the bat, get into stance and play normal shots without the bat feeling awkward or pulling them out of position.

What bat size should an 8-year-old use?

Use the player's actual height rather than age alone. Children of the same age can need different bat sizes, so enter the player's current height in the calculator and then check control and pickup.

What is the difference between Size 6 and Harrow?

Harrow is generally the next youth transition after Size 6 and before adult Short Handle. A player close to the boundary should compare both sizes and choose the one they can control comfortably.

When should a junior move to Short Handle?

Short Handle is the normal adult starting point, but height alone is not enough. The player should also be strong enough to control the bat through their normal shots without changing technique.

Does bat weight matter as much as bat size?
